Boxy Duo 35 is a mid-sized cat tree with 2 comfortable houses, a large perching area with a bed on top, and a wide scratching post.
This setup is renter-friendly and is ideal for homes with 1-4 cats, as 2 can sleep in the box-type houses while 2 can cuddle together on the top perch.
We don't usually prefer the boxes on the bottom, but some cats prefer them. Either for their bush-dwelling personality, their elderly or less abled needs, or they just got the bottom bunk as the youngest of the bunch.
The boxes have openings on two opposite sides in the standard setup, but one side could be closed off if your cats prefer hidey holes. Most cats love to see their surroundings, as they are alert at all times, but some prefer little fortresses of solitude.
The concept was made by having the top perch in line with the window ledge at our previous apartment, to give cats a wide enough area to comfortably watch the outdoors. As we lived in an apartment, we had fewer options for cat enrichment, but this cat tree has survived a few hundred foster cats and a bunch of ours during its 6 years of service. We redid the scratching post once and upgraded it to our today's standard, wrapped in top quality 12mm thick sisal rope(previous versions were 2 different versions of sisal carpeting, which served pretty well but can't compete with thick sisal rope).
The scratching pole is massive, so two or more cats can foul around the trunk with ease. Thick sisal rope gives cats the opportunity to fully immerse their claws in and shred those old claw layers. It allows them to leave their scent through scent glands in their paws and mark their territory. You should award cats clawing on the tree and not your furniture, as to divert them and entice them to back away from the last thing you thought looked cute and wouldn't be shredded by them. Let's face it, we've all made multiple expensive mistakes.
The uninterrupted cat pole offers cats a chance to fully stretch their long bodies and arch their backs. You'll often find them relieving both their stress and excitement on the pole, having their backs arched and punching their claws in. They adore the sound and love fully letting their claws sink in, as it acts as tree bark would in nature.
This tree is bottom-heavy with a large base, so you don't have to worry about wobbliness or toppling over.
We've put it on 5 pieces of 1cm high 6x6 cm wide plastic legs to make it easy to push around without damaging your floors, as the scratcher is really heavy. Also to prevent potential spills or being soaked in pet urine, as those things happen.
The scratcher is made from 18mm and 10mm birch plywood, which means it's sturdy and tightly held by screws. It's coated with multiple layers of pet-safe acrylic paints which means it's protected, and easy to clean and maintain. It can be regularly wiped down with a damp cloth, just as you would clean your standard furniture.
There are cushions inside the boxes and one huge at the top. We opted for 5cm high-density foam which gives support to joints and relieves muscle tension. The cushion cover is made with lush velvet fabric that is scratch resistant, yet soft for cats. The fabric is easily cleaned by vacuum or by a wet hand or glove, the hairs come off easily due to the short-pile fabric. There is a wide selection of fabrics to choose from, and if you have a cat with special needs send us a message to have a look at our current water/pee-resistant fabrics.
The cushions can be washed at lower settings and tumble-dried. You can opt for having multiple sets of cushions, to go with the season or change them up however and whenever you want.
This type of scratcher is ideal for people with allergies, as cushions can be cleaned regularly and everything can be vacuumed and wiped down to minimize the allergens.
As everything is made to order, everything could be made to adhere to the specific needs and your personal style. This means that everything could change sizewise and you could even pick custom colors to fully match your home, or pick colors that go best with your cats' fur. The options are endless.
This scratcher can be shared with other pets in the household. Our bunnies love it and we heard some smaller dogs taking advantage of the bottom box too.
